Western Bay of Plenty police are questioning statistics that reveal trucks were involved in 15 per cent of all fatal and serious crashes in the region.
The statistics were collected between 2005 and 2009 and published in New Zealand Transport Agency's 'Communities At Risk Register'.
The 15 per cent figure was above the national average of 10.7 per cent.
According to NZTA the region is ranked the 11th worst, out of 72 areas, for fatal and serious crashes involving trucks.
But Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager, senior sergeant Ian Campion, says he wants to know how many of the truck drivers were at fault.
Police figures show there were eight fatal crashes in the region last year and two involved trucks.
Ian says when there is a crash involving a heavy motor vehicle, there are many instances when the truck driver is not at fault.
"We know we have a significant number of heavy motor vehicles on our roads as a result of the port, so there is an expectation that a reasonable amount of crashes will involve heavy motor vehicles."
