Bay road toll lowest in years

Bay of Plenty police say the current road toll in the region is the lowest in years.
Between 1 January 2010 and 18 July 31 road fatalities were recorded in the Bay of Plenty police district.
The region's road policing manager, Kevin Taylor, says the road toll for this period is the lowest in three years.

He says the 31 fatalities are 31 too many.
"Zero fatalities is an acceptable level. The speed limit is what it says on the signs. There's no about or somewhere close."
Kevin says the measures adopted by Bay of Plenty police is helping to reduce road fatalities.
Police in the region are proactively investigating complaints about fellow drivers to *555.
"We can't get to everyone, everytime. We get hundreds and hundreds of calls each year but we are proactive about targeting reports from members of the public."
He says Bay police also carry out a passive breath test on every driver they stop.
"Alcohol is a huge issue. Drink driving is a massive risk."
