East Coast road washout

The East Coast Road is down to one lane east of Opotiki where the Motu River has undermined its bank.
State Highway 35 will be down to one lane until at least July 20, says NZ Transport Agency BOP State Highway manager Rod James.

State Highway 35 undermined.

"The time needed to source the fill material to rebuild the bank, and for the river to recede so workers can access the repair area means work won't begin until July 20 at the earliest," says Rod.
"Once underway, we expect the repair work will take approximately two weeks but of course, this will depend on weather and river conditions."
The swollen Motu River has undermined the highway's foundation bank 44km east of Opotiki, leaving it vulnerable to collapse. A short section of the highway has been reduced to one-way and directional priority signs have been erected.
