Steamers fans get colourful

A passionate Bay of Plenty Steamers fan is a sleep away from seeing their creativity and pride come to life with voting open on the final three designs for the side's away jersey.

For the past two months fans having been showing their true colours and getting creative to design the playing strip – part of celebrating the launch of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union's focus on community or ‘Bay Wide, Bay Pride'.

The top three jersey designs currently up for public voting until Friday.

This ITM Cup season, the side will be proudly wearing an alternate jersey designed one of three Bay of Plenty youths - Keinan McCollum, Taine Lansdale and Aidan Horan.

The winning jersey will be worn during both the Steamers away match against Taranaki in August and the home match against Otago in October as opposed to the traditional blue and gold hoops.

The top three entries were selected by a panel based on criteria, including elements that proudly display the Bay of Plenty holistically as a region, retaining the traditional colours and expressing a love of rugby in the design.

The three designs have been whittled down from the 75 entries.

Keinan currently leads the voting with 306 ‘likes' on the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union's Facebook page, followed closely by Aidan on 286.

Bay of Plenty steamers coach Kevin Schuler is excited by the large number of entries, showing so much support for the team.

'All three finalists were chosen because they not only had cool designs, but also great stories and meaning behind their creations.

'We promise that the winning jersey will be worn with real pride by the team this season.”

The winner will be decided by vote at 4pm on Friday. Supporters can ‘like' one design with the design with the most likes the winner. The 2014 alternate jersey will be made available in limited numbers only to the public via presales.

The winner will receive an alternate Jersey that can be signed by the 2014 Bay of Plenty Steamers team.

The Steamers first match of the 2014 ITM Cup season is against Southland in Invercargill on August 15.
