Coromandel flooding closes highway

Flooding has cut off the top end of the Coromandel to road traffic, New Zealand Transport Agency and police advise on Friday afternoon.

State Highway 25 is cut between Thames and Coromandel at Manaia after earlier reports on Friday advising drivers in the region of surface water, slips and the need to be cautious.
The highway is also closed by a slip at Te Rerenga, near Matarangi.
SH 25 is also closed by flooding on McLeods Straight south of Whitianga.
The advice at 4.30pm was that the road south of Whitianga is closed to all but 4 wheel drive traffic.
There are also reports of flooding on the Coromandel East Coast near Matarangi on SH25 north of Whitianga - and at Hikuai south of Tairua.
A Traffic Road Event Information System Event notice notice at 4.50pm advises of surface flooding on SH25A, the Kopu Hikuai road, and advises SH2 through the Karangahake Gorge as an alternate route.
