A 40km stretch of highway between Mount Maunganui and Paengaroa was ranked the second most dangerous in New Zealand, according to a new state highway ratings system.
The KiwiRAP rating system was launched in partnership between the Automobile Association and government agencies on Thursday.
A summary of New Zealand's most dangerous highways on the KiwiRAP website reveals the road between the start of SH2 in Mount Maunganui and SH33 in Paengaroa has the second highest 'collective risk' in the country.
This is a measure of the total number of fatal and serious injury crashes per kilometre over a section of road.
The rating system also showed 11 per cent of the Bay of Plenty's state highway network had a high crash density.
The road between SH2 in Maungatapu and SH29 over the Kaimai Ranges was ranked the 13th most dangerous.
KiwiRAP's system also incorporates a new star rating for New Zealand highways.
About 42 per cent of the Bay of Plenty's state highway network was given a two-star rating.
Two stars classify a highway as one that has major deficiencies, such as poor alignment, poor roadside conditions, inadequate median protection and poorly designed intersections at regular intervals.
