Construction workers helping to build the Harbour Link project celebrated a milestone recently when they reached the half-way mark in the construction of the second Harbour Bridge crossing.
Tim Davidson, Beca contract administrator and civil engineer, is one of many working on the Harbour Link project.
The thirteenth bridge section of 23 is now being constructed and managers behind the project now believe the bridge will be completed before Christmas this year, in time for the next deluge of summer traffic.
A special casting shed is being used to construct the 23 individual sections of bridge, which are 20 metres each and are joined to complete the 466 metre long bridge.
Once a bridge section is complete and attached to the other sections, it is pushed 20 metres across the harbour using hydraulic jacks and piles in the ground.
Kevin Reid, New Zealand Transport Agency senior project manager, expects the project to come in under budget and says $30 million has already been given back to the Government.
Construction on the Harbour Link project started in March 2007 and the official completion date was originally March 31, 2010.
