Only a few days after sweeping to victory as Tauranga's new MP, Simon Bridges was in Wellington learning the parliamentary ropes.

This week he joined 15 other new National Party MPs at the party's first caucus meeting since the election.
He was also given the grand tour of his work place for the next three years by National's seasoned MP Gerry Brownlee and party whip Nathan Guy.
'I want to soak it all up and learn and do what I can do to become a very effective local MP and it's very much a time of learning but I'm very hopeful that we can progress some of the issues I've talked about,” says Simon.
He managed to secure Tauranga by more than 10,000 votes, creating one of the obstacles that stopped Winston Peters from returning to Parliament for the first time in three decades.
It was fitting that Simon's first meal in the capital as Tauranga's new MP was Winston's Schnitzel, a meal on the menu at the Backbencher pub, a local Wellington haunt for MPs.
'Winston Peters can be very proud of his long and successful career and I've said before that I respect him and while we were jousting in debates I learnt a lot from him and I wish him well for the future,” says Simon.
The priorities Simon has promised to tackle over the next three years as MP include upgrading the Tauranga police station, expanding the Courthouse and ensuring the RSA land is used by Tauranga Hospital for expansion.
Simon also wants to take Tauranga's infrastructure such as roads and broadband into the 21st century but admits that takes time.
'Some of the things we want to do can't be achieved in minutes, days or even months and years. They take a long ranging view and I want to deliver to Tauranga over several years. Something like a highway can't be built in six months,” says Simon.
