Coach receives death threat

This weekend's clash between the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic and West Coast Fever in Mount Maunganui will be a welcome distraction for the Australian side's coach, who has been the subject of a death threat.

West Coast Fever coach Norma Plummer.

It is understood Dunedin Police have been called in to investigate the threat to controversial coach Norma Plummer, made by a Dunedin resident.

The threat was made late last year in a posting on the former Australian coach's personal website, says a statement from the Fever and Netball Western Australia said. The Fever will not comment on the exact nature of the threat.

Fairfax reports Netball WA contacted Australian Federal Police about the posting, who in turn contacted New Zealand Police ahead of the team's visit to Dunedin for last weekend's game against the Southern Steel.

Dunedin police took measures to ensure the safety of the West Coast Fever coach and team while they stayed in the city for the game won by the Steel 66-65.

Plummer coached the Australian national side from 2003 to 2011 and is known to previously rile Kiwi fans with her comments.

When New Zealand won the netball World Cup in Jamaica in 2004, Plummer said the Silver Ferns played like "a bunch of scrubbers" with New Zealand media hitting back labelling Plummer "The Ice Queen".

The Fever sit 7th on the table with one solitary win, while the Magic remain the only unbeaten side after four rounds, edging past the Melbourne Vixens 49-44 last week.

The Fever flew into Tauranga on Sunday where they are based ahead of this weekend's game at the ASB Arena.

It's a game, not life and death

While Ms Plummer may be irritating and ascerbic, it is foolish for us to rise to her bait. (And death threats are unacceptable in ANY sport, no matter the verbal provocation. Good to see the police taking this seriously.) The best response to this unsportsmanlike coach is to simply point at the results...
