Shelterbelt smashed in crash

The roof of a vehicle had to be cut off to remove a man trapped inside after a car smashed through a shelterbelt in the Kaimais overnight.

Emergency services were called to the accident on State Highway 29, just passed Poripori Road, at about 8pm.

Greerton Fire Brigade was called to a car crash in the Kaimais along with Tauranga Fire Brigade.

Greerton Fire Brigade station officer Steve Wright says the driver of the vehicle suffered minor cuts and grazes in the crash.

Steve says the car has come off the road and crashed through a shelterbelt in a nearby orchard.

'There was one vehicle involved and one person in the vehicle.

'He was lightly trapped and the roof of the car had to be cut off by the Tauranga Fire Brigade to free the man.”

Steve says the man was then removed from the car and treated by St John Paramedics at the scene before being taken to Tauranga Hospital to be checked over.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
