Road works causing traffic havoc

Motorists are being warned to be patient while travelling on State Highway 2 through Te Puke as resealing works are causing major traffic delays.

Callers to the 0800 SUNLIVE report traffic is backed up along the highway between Te Puke and Tauranga, as far back as Waitangi.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says contractors are undertaking resealing works on SH2, about 200 metres from Manoeka Road.

'Traffic is backed right up to Waitangi. There is a 50km/h speed restriction in place causing the traffic to back up.”

I came through this today and can't believe the workmanship metal appeared to just be dumped on tar and the traffic being used to roll it what a joke

The contractors have so much thought for others, so much so that they decide doing re sealing in a peak traffic time is a way of being nice, good to see intelligence and planning is optimised to cause the least disruption to commuters.

Better plan

Do the work at night, less traffic and not back logs ... oh gosh I never thought about that ...

Harvest Time

Over the last 4 - 5 years, I have noticed that the powers that be seem to choose to complete road works just when it is time for the Kiwifruit Harvest.

Is that all...Havoc?

it comes down to management of the traffic and what i see they could open their minds a little with STMS myself my main priority is to keep traffic moving at all times,

Havoc?

The only issue here is impatient drivers. If you know they are resealing the road be prepared to wait or dont go past there until you need to. Traffic congestion is nothing here compared to Auckland. It is not the contractor who decides when the road is sealed it is the council who plans and books it in and it is done during the day to keep costs down.

Be Patient

There seems to be alot of so called "experts" responding when it should be sealed and how to roll the chip. As another correspondent has said, Local Authorities decide when a section of road section is planned to be sealed, and costs go up if it is done at night (wages), plus temperature is at an optimum during the day for sealing.

The main issue

It wasn't the 50km/h limit causing the backlog, it was the fact that they'd throttled the road down and the traffic was doing 18km/h heading north out of Te Puke. Whilst there we're a couple of guys in a bumper truck parked in No 3Rd, laughing like drains. I know it would be anathema to Mr Campion, but surely someone could signal the traffic to speed up? That 18km/h figure was the top speed I saw on a GPS. If they'd got it up to 50km/h that would be nearly triple the flow rate. Compounding matters further on there was a policeman measuring the fatal crash site from Sunday. Another little hiccup. There was no traffic management.
