Fine wine, fine tunes

SunLive journalist Zoe Hunter rocked out to the Classic Hits Winery Tour at Wharepai Domain.

Like a fine wine, the Classic Hits Winery Tour became more satisfying, more valuable and more intoxicating as the night went on.

One veteran smash-hit laden rock band, a young singing sensation and the velvet honey sounds of another smash-hit band made for a perfect blend of talent at the 17-date tour.

The three-band line up was enough to attract a crowd of close to 2000 fans making it a mini festival in the city's Wharepai Domain on Valentine's Day.

First up was Breaks Co-Op, returning to the stage for the first time since recording their sing-along hit ‘The Otherside' which ruled the airwaves and singles chart a few years ago and introduced the audience to newly released songs including ‘Sounds Familiar'.

Having warmed the audience up with families already taking to the dance floor, Breaks Co-Op opened the stage to Mount Maunganui raised Stan Walker.

Adorned in red basketball singlets with the word ‘Walker' stamped on the back, the younger generation – mostly teenage girls – screamed with delight when Stan entered the stage.

Backed with a crew of hip-hop dancers, Stan had the audience copying his booty-wriggle and singing in unison as he belted out his well-loved hits.

From the young musician, the microphone was handed to Jordan Luck and his band The Exponents, who have earned an unmatched reputation for iconic songs and sing-along shows performed to generations of fans.

The words 'why does love do this to me?” are still chanting in my head.

Delivering most of their hit songs, The Exponents – like a fine wine – have certainly grown better with years.

Why?

Why did Council/Mainstreet organise a market and movie on the Waterfront on the same night as this event? It appears these organisations are hell bent on destroying the CBD no matter what the cost is to others.
