The New Zealand Transport Agency has set another reopening date for the Mangorewa Gorge after failing to meet deadlines previously set. The gorge is now expected to reopen at 4pm, September 28. The Mangorewa Gorge closed on August 6 after an early morning rockslide buried a car and its occupants in boulders.
NZTA is hoping to achieve its September 28 deadline for the Mangorewa Gorge's reopening.
NZTA is still unsure when the report into the cause of the rockslide will be complete.
As part of the road widening process in the gorge, workers had carried out rock blasting there in the weeks
leading up to the rockslide.
NZTA spokesperson Julie Hannam says the report can't be released until a Department of Labour report on the
rockslide is complete.
'It could be some time, we are quite limited. We can't totally complete our report until we get feedback from
the Department of Labour and that will feed into our report,” says Julie.
Once reopened, the road will be closed between 9am and 4pm but will fully reopen a few weeks later.
A traffic light controlled one way system will be in place to enable the public to pass through the worksite,
but motorists are still being warned of delays.
