New Zealand Transport Agency has announced that it will not be reopening State Highway 36 through the Mangorewa Gorge for at least another two weeks.
The gorge was closed on August six when a massive rock fall occurred there, crushing two cars and forcing a third off the road and down into the riverbed.
NZTA has been working to clear the debris from the road and to make the area safe again for motorists, but State Highway manager Rod James says further work still needs to be completed before the gorge can be reopened to the public.
NZTA had announced previously that the gorge would reopen on Monday, September 14. This is the second time the agency has missed a deadline in clearing the gorge and explaining why the incident of August 6 occurred.
On August 11 NZTA announced that it would know the cause of the rock fall in several weeks. A full month has now passed and it is still unknown if the incident was a result of natural causes or whether the agency's rock blasting programme in the area was responsible.
The reopening is now expected to be at the end of September as people's safety is the priority says Rod.
'We understand that this is not the news that motorists are hoping to hear but their safety, and the safety of our workmen are our top priority and we need to be sure that the situation is as safe as possible before we can reopen this highway.”
The investigation into why the rock fall occurred is continuing and NZTA expects results to be known soon.
NZTA spokesperson Julie Hannan says before the engineer's report on the incident can be released it will be explained to the agency's communications team, who will translate the ‘technical information' so that it is easily understood by the public.

How about a little honesty here. The fall was caused by the blasting and drilling around the base, it was there for passerbys to see. The road could have been cleared in a day after the fall by competent contractors with a bulldozer. The B/S is worse than the fall get real
