Tauranga's second harbour bridge will bring a new name to waterfront structures.
The harbour crossing from the Tauranga end to Tasman Quay at the Mount is officially named Te Awanui Drive.
The original bridge was named Tauranga Harbour Bridge by equally imaginatively named Tauranga Harbour Bridge Committee.
Te Awanui Drive.
An official name was required to go on the legislation enabling the bridge to be paid for by tolls.
Te Awanui Drive was decided upon about a year ago, says Trish Souter at the Harbour Link information office.
Te Awanui Drive stretches from the Marsh St-Dive Crescent roundabout to just short of Tasman Quay incorporating what is still known as the Aerodrome Bridge – and the span formerly known as the Tauranga Harbour Bridge.
The flyover is known as the Chapel Street Viaduct, but that's not official. It is not yet known if the flyover will have a separate name or be incorporated into Takitimu Drive which will also become State Highway 2A.
Highway 2A will go from the port's Sulphur Point gate to where it connects with Tamatea Arikinui Drive, or State Highway Two.
The entire Harbour Link Project is expected to be completed by mid December with both bridges and the $131 million flyover open to traffic.
