Weekend road delay warning

Police are warning motorists of potential delays this long weekend as Tauranga hosts four major events.

In Mount Maunganui traffic could be heavy around the airport due to the Tauranga Air Show and Te Maunga where ASB Baypark hosts the ENZED V8 Jetsprints.

Traffic is likely to be heavy around the region this long weekend.

There is also the Stars under the Stars concert at Mills Reef in Bethlehem and Harness Racing at Tauranga Racecourse.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager, Senior Sergeant Ian Campion, says drivers need to be patient and considerate while driving in and around the region.

He says people should also factor in possible events by either avoiding the event venues or allowing extra time to get where they are going.

'There is some wet weather forecast for the weekend and drivers are urged to take extra care on the roads.

'A few years ago, the Western Bay of Plenty was one of the least safest places to drive in New Zealand but we have turned this around and ask everyone using our roads to slow down, make sure everyone in their vehicle is wearing a seat belt and not to drink or take drugs and drive.”

Coromandel roads are also reported to be heavily congested today with both lanes full and many vehicles towing boats and caravans.

Travel from Tauranga to Whitianga is slow, and characterised by some poor driver behaviour with slow vehicles not pulling over.

Ian says people travelling long distances should also take regular breaks every couple of hours or change drivers.

'Drivers are reminded the 4km/h speed tolerance is still live through to the end of January. There are demerit points on offer if drivers choose to speed, even a little.”
