Cycle crash timely reminder

Police are offering a timely reminder to cyclists and other road-users to be careful when commuting around the region following a crash between a cyclist and vehicle on Marine Parade this morning.

An ambulance and police were called to the busy stretch holiday spot at about 9.10am after a cyclist attempted to overtake a stationary vehicle and fell off, receiving only minor injuries.

Cyclists are being warned to ensure they wear helmets on busy roads this summer.

'The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, hit the car they were trying to overtake, fell off and was taken to Tauranga Hospital for a check-over,” says Tauranga Police Acting Senior Sergeant Cam Anderson.

Marine Parade resident Jason Middleton, who arrived the scene at about 9.10am, believes the bike hit car on front left wheel and was crumpled.

Jason says he rides the road stretch daily on his bike and thinks it is 'utterly dangerous”.

'You're constantly dodging things; perhaps the cycle lanes should be better marked. People just turn in front of you, pull out from the curb and don't see you – it's quite risky just riding a bike along there, particularly when it's busy like at the moment.”

'I notice in particular, hardly anybody riding their bikes along Marine Parade wears a safety helmet,” says Jason.

Cam says police are enforcing the wearing of helmets by cyclists, with those being caught without one likely to receive a $55 fine. 'This incident is a timely reminder that it is easier to put on a helmet than end up in hospital.”

Those who do not wear a helmet are leaving themselves at risk of sustaining a head injury, an injury for the rest of their lives and 'can cost thousands in hospital medical fees”, says Cam. 'We are hot on enforcing this at the moment.”

Should clamp down on this cyclists not wearing a helmet like they are on the not 4kph on cars. Also you crash with no helmet no ACC you have to pay yourself

Nice to see a bit of rule enforcement after a long lax period.

Anyone that has an accident whilst riding a cycle and were not wearing a helmet SHOULD NOT BE ENTITLED TO ACC.

Cycling on main roads is far to dangerous and always has been and will continue to be.

spot checks should be done on bikes for effective brakes

Why ?

Why do the police strictly enforce the helmet rule on motorcyclists and ignore the cyclists? I see the police ignoring cyclists every day as I travel around the City. The sight of cyclists riding on the footpath being ignored by police is another anomaly that should be enforced rather than ignored.

Why...?

..do these people put themselves at risk?..is it a dare perhaps?. I see there is a particular mention that the cyclist involved was (apparently) wearing a helmet..however that does not give them special powers over road users who actually pay to be there. User pays as soon as possible please, ACC is a joke particularly for those who actively flaunt the law...did anyone think of "common" sense?..it's not that common it seems...

Cyclists also remember

Passing a slow moving car on the inside is not a good ideas, and if you do try this and the car cuts you off, as in a vehicle you do not expect someone to be coming up on the inside please do not abuse them, like what happened to me once at the mount on marine parade. Especially in front of my kids, not a good look. And this wasn't a young surfy type but someone in full cycling gears on their $10000 bike. You respect the cars on the road and the drivers will respect you.

what are you on about owning the road...

Who pays

Why do people like grout by think that just because you ride a bike you haven't paid road user fees. I pay for two cars and 1 motorcycle to be on the road and because I like to get out on my bicycle, why do somepeople think I have any less aright to use the roads. Perhaps all car drivers should spend a year on bicycles before they are allowed to drive a car, then we may see a different attitude towards each other.

Try crossing the road

Try crossing the road at the pedestrian crossings along the front and try and get a cyclist to stop I have seen women and children drive out of the way.I have been half way across the crossing out side the deckchair and had bikes come from both sides.cyclist need to be more aware. My wife and I had to jump off the foot path 2 weeks ago cyclist ride on foot path did not stop told us to Fxxx xxf out off the way

Driver testing

Posted on 06-01-2014 14:20 | By triplediamond

The answer is simple.... All vehicle drivers should be re-tested every 5 years! A 30 minute practical test every 5 years would sort out the NZ driver and crash problem. Most NZ drivers don't even know our road rules let alone where to look, use indicators ALL the time and travel at a safe distance behind others. Time to toughen up.
