Tiki taking centre stage

Papamoa-based musician Tiki Taane is set to play at one of the biggest sporting events in New Zealand when he headlines the 2014 Wellington Sevens next year.

Tiki will perform on both days, welcoming 16 international teams to the tournament at the opening ceremony on February 7.

The musician and producer says he cannot wait to perform at the world-class sporting event, which will be a different atmosphere to what he was used to.

"Being that close to the rugby action, being a part of it, will be a huge buzz for me," says Tiki.

"It will be much different performing so far away from the crowd. I'm used to having a crowd right up in my face, whereas Sevens Wellington is like playing in a huge bowl. The audience will be a full 360 degrees, towering up about nine storeys, so it's going to be insane," he said.

Round five of the HSBC Sevens World Series is being held at Westpac Stadium in what shapes to be another weekend full of fun and world-class sporting action.

This will be the 15th year Wellington has played host to the two-day international tournament, attended by 16 of the world's top sevens rugby teams.

Tiki is also particularly looking forward to performing a song with his father and Te Pou o Mangatawhiri kapa haka group.

"That song will be thunderous inside the stadium."

Drummers Batucada will lead the fan trail along Wellington's waterfront from Odlins Plaza to Westpac Stadium, while songstress duo Bella Kalolo and Rosita Vai also return to the lineup.

Sevens Wellington general manager Marty Donoghue says the tournament wanted to bring in someone special to lead the entertainment lineup in 2014.

"Tiki showcases music that not only represents New Zealand, but also the tournament, and he's got a great set lined up for the two days."

but..... his music represents N.Z????, not me it doesnt, and I am a "true blue kiwi", and I am sure as "eggs are eggs", that his music does not represent the police force.

Aye?? A good write up comes along about someone doing things well for himself, and you come up with this? "Not me it doesnt" you say, well why dont you tell us all what a "real true blue kiwi" does for NZ then, so we can comment on it.

someone doing well for themselves does not incite violence, and as I said good on him, an opinion is an opinion which is exactly what you are posting!!!
