A slick selection of muscle cars and hot rods took to the wet Tauranga streets in an impressive display to raise more than $2500 for charity last night.

The 10th annual Tauranga Toy Run saw about 85 cars make their way around the city with all proceeds and toys donated to The Child Cancer Foundation and Waipuna Hospice.

From 6pm the array of classic cars set off from ASB Baypark on the charity cruise through Papamoa, downtown Mount Maunganui before parking up at Fraser Cover shopping centre.

Tauranga car enthusiast and co-organiser Jill deBuisson is expecting donations to exceed last year's $2500 despite donations still being counted.

'We still have more money than last year even though we had less cars. If we have a fine day we are looking at 250 cars plus.”

Jill, along with friend and fellow car enthusiast Sarah Ellis, started the event 10 years ago with the help of their husbands.

And despite last night's 'torrential” conditions Jill is rapt with the amount of people who did not let the rain deter them in spreading some Christmas cheer.

'I'm just really proud of the people turned up; that's really cool.

'We even had a couple turn up late because of the weather conditions from Whangamata.”

Owners of hot-rods, muscles cars, classic and vintage cars donated money or toys to enter before participating in the charity cruise.

The Child Cancer Foundation will receive both money and toys and Waipuna Hospice will be given money raised from last night's event.
