UPDATE 4PM: A section of State Highway 2 at Pukehina is down to one lane after a truck and trailer unit and two cars crashed today.
Emergency services were called to the crash involving an empty TD Haulage truck and two cars near Benner Road about 2pm.
Emergency services are dealing with a crash involving two cars and a truck.
Initial reports stated the drivers were trapped, but on arrival the occupants of both cars were out of the vehicles.
Northern Fire Communications shift manager Jarron Phillips says the truck driver, reported to be a Mount Maunganui man, was complaining of back pain.
'St John Ambulance are in the process of stabilising the man before he is removed from the truck.”
The Mount-based driver was assessed by paramedics before being taken to Tauranga Hospital by ambulance.
It is understood the truck and trailer was empty and heading back to the company's Mount Maunganui-based depot when the crash occurred.
Power contractors are also on site after the truck took out two light stands.
Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the truck and trailer unit is on its side in a nearby paddock.
"The two other vehicles are off the road and the drivers are not injured."
Ian says officers still at the scene are working to establish the cause of the crash.
He says the commercial vehicle investigation unit is being called to help with the investigation.
