The stricter policing of speed limits during Queen's Birthday Weekend is one of the factors being attributed as the reason for just one death on New Zealand's roads during the holiday.
In the Western Bay of Plenty the number of road accidents was down on previous years and the only injuries incurred were minor.
These all appear good reasons for tighter policing of speed limits all year round, but how do people feel about this proposal?
SunLive visited Tauranga's Red Square to ask the question: how do you feel about tighter policing of speed limits?
I got stung the other day and was only 4km over the limit. It is a good thing to get people to slow down.
Melanie Guy, Tauranga
Pretty good, although I don't agree with the 4km limit as there are always fluctuations in the speedometer in cars.
But generally tiding up is a good thing.
Bryce Hitchen, Tauranga
Good idea as there is a lot of traffic on the road and everyone is speeding.
The people who were speeding would get pulled over.
Kayla Aitchison, Te Puke
It is pretty ****, what is an extra 5kms going to do?
Kurt Fraser, Tauranga
I agree with that, cars are too powerful these days.
Barbara Hinds, Tauranga
Good, I think it is wise and important. And if it is going to bring down the road toll I am all for anything.
Permanently tighter control, but don't reduce the speed limit.
