Police targeting speed

Western Bay of Plenty police are cracking down on motorists who flout road rules this Queen's Birthday Weekend.
Head of the Western Bay of Plenty strategic traffic unit, senior sergeant Ian Campion, says police will be out in force on the region's roads this long weekend and will have no tolerance for motorists who break road rules.

Police are getting tough on speeding this holiday weekend.

"We will prosecute every driver caught more than 4km/h over the speed limit to help deter unsafe driving which puts lives at risk," says Ian.
There were six fatal crashes and 114 reported injury crashes across New Zealand during Queen's Birthday Weekend last year.
National road policing manager Paula Rose says a high proportion of fatal crashes are occurring during weekends.
"Our weekends are killing us, when you get behind the wheel you need to take responsibility for yourself and your passengers by making safe decisions," says Rose.
"Road safety is everyone's responsibility and police will be out doing their part too."

Presumably the no tolerance attitude also includes prosecuting excessively slow drivers who refuse to pull over thereby creating long queues of frustrated motorists, as this also "puts lives at risk"
