The woman at the centre of a lawn mower racing accident at Omokoroa No.1 School yesterday is out of hospital and asking when the next race meeting will be held, says Bay of Plenty Lawn Mower Racing Club president Adam Pendred.
The 56-year-old Auckland woman was taken to Tauranga Hospital after coming off her mower during the midday race at the school's annual Omokoroa Ride on Mower Race Day.
The injured racer lies on the ground following the collision yesterday.
Adam and race organiser Bronwyn Carter both believe she is the first person to be taken to hospital in the event's 10 year history.
Bronwyn says two machines collided and one of them rode up over the other and landed on the woman.
After being treated and discharged from hospital yesterday, the woman - an experienced racer - is today in good spirits, says Adam.
'She's going to get straight back on her mower as soon as the bruises have gone. She's not worried about it at all, she's already asking when the next event is.”
He says it was just bad luck on the day, and the woman 'just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time”.
'It's supposed to be a non-contact sport, but occasionally there's the odd bump and rub and sometimes it can end unfortunately like that. There are various reasons why they happen but it's just racing. Everybody else got back up on their mowers and continued racing, but she didn't.
'It's a bit like riding dirt bikes, you can't expect to go into a dirt bike race without falling off. They are falling off all the time. It gives the crowd a bit of thrills and spills to look at.”
While held in conjunction with the school's event, the actual racing is run by the New Zealand Lawn Mower Racing Association. The group's Nationals competition was held in Omokoroa throughout the weekend.
This year 22 racers from across the North Island competed in Round 4 (the final round) of NZLMRA Nationals at the school.
Another four or five racers, including Adam, came off in various spills during the day.
