Update: 8:20AM One person is dead and several others were taken to hospital, one with critical injuries, following a motorcycle and car crash near Rotorua.
The Rotorua based BayTrust Rescue Helicopter transported one man to Waikato Hospital with critical injuries.
Emergency services were called to the crash near Fitzgerald Glade on State Highway 5, west of Rotorua, just after 2.30pm on Saturday.
Police say a group of motorcyclists were seriously injured after being struck by a car travelling in the opposite direction.
Rotorua based BayTrust Rescue Helicopter pilot Barry Vincent says 'there were multiple vehicles involved including cars and motorcycles”.
Road diversions were put in place between Harwood and Maraeroa Roads which Barry says provided a small landing area on the road for the helicopter to land.
Barry says the helicopter transported a man to Waikato Hospital with critical injuries. Other patients were transported by St John Ambulance.
The road remained closed for several hours.

On Friday I was driving over the Kaimais and 3 motor cyclists, in tandem, passed me on a double yellow line. I was doing 100 kmh at the time. I thought they were an accident waiting to happen.
Stay in your lane

As a motorcyclist I pass on my condolences to the families of those who lost their life or were injured. Also as a motorcyclist I know that you need to stay in your lane. Not saying that the riders here crossed the centreline, but I see it happening in our region all too often. Take a look at the first few seconds of my video here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g01ICdJHLlg
Info correct....

For the person who has said it was one of the "Greasy dogs" - I suggest you get your facts right before leaving a comment :)

well it was not a "greasy dogs" MC member that was killed, he was just on the ride with them for the day, as a few riders where and some may have been running the lines so to speak, that does not mean he was, most people in cars don't even see bikes at the best of times really, who know who was to blame but the family's of all involve will be devastated..
Surprising?

Having seen the antics of some of these riders (including one seen recently near Tauranga), it is little wonder there was a fatality. Invincibility applies no more to them than anyone else. Note that the Police had received reports of the riders' causing concern to the public.

Any death on the road is a waste. Everyone concerned loses.
