Champion shows youthful side

With engines finely tuned and ready, dirt is expected to fly as Motocross riders of all ages aim to grab a priceless piece of Cody Cooper riding memorabilia this Sunday.

Hosted by Maddix Park in Ohauiti, the Fun Cody Cooper Trophy MX event sees young motocross riders try win one of Cody's 60 trophies from his younger competing days.

The 29-year-old Papamoa rider is currently the MX1 NZ MX 450cc Class champion after winning all three races at this year's final round in Taupo. He last held the title in 2011 ahead of Scottish former Grand Prix star Billy MacKenzie and Australian Todd Waters.

Event organiser Shelley Dean says the focus of the day is on the younger riders with Cody's trophies allocated for first to fourth place in the mini and junior classes.

'It's just to encourage all the younger kids. It's a fun day for all riders and people that don't normally race much they can come along and have a fun race.

'The trophies awaiting new winners are trophies Cody Cooper himself won on his way up through the mini and junior ranks to become an international rider and New Zealand champion.”

There are also certificates signed by Cody for all young riders, aged up to 16-years-old, involved on the day. There is also racing in the senior, veteran and women's divisions.

Shelley hopes the trophies will serve as an inspiration and encouragement to those seeking excellence in the sport and as a reminder that, with focus, determination and hard work – helped of course by a small dash of talent – success is possible.

'The trophies are not all first place trophies. There are seconds, thirds and sixths as well, but just like all mini and junior riders out there, Cody had to begin somewhere.”

Registrations are only on the day but at least 70 riders are expected, with racing from 10am to 3pm, says Shelley.
