Woman drunk with child in car

A Tauranga mother is facing drink driving charges after a three car crash on Totara Street overnight.

Police were called to the crash about 8.43pm to find a car which had crashed into two stationary vehicles, stopped at the railway crossing waiting for a train to pass.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the offending vehicle failed to stop in time, striking the second vehicle and causing a three car nose-to tail-crash.

He says the 39-year-old female driver produced a breath alcohol limit of more than 950 micrograms at the scene. The legal adult limit is 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

A male occupant was also in the third car but left the scene before police arrived, says Ian.

'Worse was the woman's eight-year-old daughter was also in the car and sustained whiplash as a result of the crash.”

Ian says the crash could have resulted in serious injury or worse and it is 'just beggar's belief why a mature person would make the decision to drive while they are this intoxicated”.

'It's just unacceptable. She not only puts herself at risk, but puts her passenger, eight-year-old daughter and all of our families, friends and other road users at significant risk.”

Ian says Child, Youth and Family have been advised.

'It is incidents like this that remind us of the need to make good decisions and simply getting behind the wheel when you are this intoxicated is simply a disaster waiting to happen.

'I just need to remind everyone out there to make travel arrangements prior to drinking and to simply use the rule; if you've had a few drinks do not drive. It's that simple, irrespective of the circumstances.”

Police are yet to determine what charges will be laid against the woman, but Ian says she will be charged and is likely to appear in Tauranga District Court next week.

hopefully her license cancelled and car impounded permanatley and possible sold at auction to cover costs instead of increasing everyone elses acc levels on reregistration.

How dumb are we?

It is way past time we created a culture where drink/driving is seeen for the lethal stupidity it is, instead of a heroic stand against authority, with people getting kudos because they made it home. When she's sober, I'm sure this lady will regret her actions, but if her associates had stopped her before she got in the car, or if it was ingrained in her that drink/driving is just stupid and dangerous, the outcome might have been different. As a community we are stupid if we tolerate this; as individuals, we are stupid if we even consider doing it.

What gets up my nose is that the majority of drivers are in control, yet we are all being persecuted because of stupid people such as this who obviously are never going to give a toss about limits. I for one am getting sick of constantly being brought down to these common denominators.

The price we pay

Agree with all comments! In reality she will likely get a $1000 fine plus 6 months, she will have no insurance cover. Therefore her car, plus the damage to other cars, plus costs. A guesstimate of 10 grand? If she is a solo mum she will have to pay it all @ $20 a week, or 10 years to pay it all back. All I can hope for is that the other parties involved were insured!

It's these offenders police should target

Forget lowering the limit, target the criminals who are already driving way over the existing limit. My guess that if found guilty the penalty for this will be weak, no jail and no enforced fines or reparations. Unrelated question, can you get a grant from WINZ to pay your fines, or do they in effect get paid from your benefit anyway?

It just goes on..and on..and on on...

Perhaps I am reading a bit more into this than I should, but..we are wheeling out the same old phrases that we are all so used too.."It's just unacceptable" (many don't even know what that means!)..and, "to drive while they are this intoxicated"..as if a lower level of intoxification is somehow acceptable?...can we get over this and deal to these pathetic people realistically please?...words really fail me for this ongoing issue.
