Family fun on the clay track

It was the story of the siblings in the saloon and stock car feature races at ASB Baypark's fireworks meeting on Saturday night.

In the stock car feature race sister was helping brother, but in the saloons it was all rivalry brother versus brother. There was also a brief two lap sibling sideshow in the sprint car pole shuffle.

There were a few stoppages in the mini stocks

While super stock driver Karl Ross took the chequered flag in both heats, stock car driver Scott Hayward (92m) achieved the rare feat of being the first stock car driver home in all three races on the night. He won the feature outright thanks in no small part to the efforts of sister Caitlin (94m) who ran shotgun in the closing laps to offer protection, and being rewarded with second place.

Steve Cowling (2NZ) came out on top in a battle with brother Chris that lasted much of the saloon feature, taking advantage of lapped traffic to make an inside move.

Brent McClymont (3NZ) and Michelle Wymer (75m) started the feature on the front row, but McClymont dropped out early and, despite a strong start, Wymer was passed by both Cowling brothers – first Chris (272m) then Steve – on the same lap before falling back to fourth by the end of the race.

With Chris leading, Steve saw – and took – his chance as the two Tauranga ITM sponsored cars closed in on lapped traffic.

"Lapped traffic can win or lose you the race,'' said Steve. "He (Chris) just made the wrong decision but it could easily have gone either way.''

Steve had already made the decision to take the opposite line to his brother as they caught the back markers two laps from the end.

"If he was going to go low I was going to go high and he was going to go high, I was going to go low.''

It was the latter that happened and Steve took the lead and the honours.

Back markers also had an influence on the sprint car feature race with Auckland visitors Jamie McDonald (71a) and Dean Brindle (2NZ) fighting it out with McDonald holding the lead for much of the race and Brindle managing to get alongside several times but not getting his front wing in front until the back markers came into play.

"That's what you've got to do in those situations,'' he said after celebrating the win.

McDonald and Brindle were joined by other Western Springs drivers Daniel Rogers and Greg Pickerill and Wellington's Stephen Taylor.

A pole shuffle, that at one point pitted brothers James and Keaton Dahm together – with James coming out on top – finished with McDonald and Brindle on the front row for the feature.

'McDonald jumped the start and they ran wheel to wheel most of that race as well. They swapped a few times but in the end Brindle came out on top,' says Baypark Speedway manager Roger Bailey.

Brindle's win gave him a clean sweep as he had earlier won both heat races. Stephen Taylor came through for third place in the feature in third, says

Matt Smith made it two super saloon feature wins from two this season – this time with a much sweeter sounding car than the previous week, magneto problems being the cause during the opening meeting.

Karl Hanlon and Gavin Dyer, making his first on-track appearance of the season, were the heat winners.

'Matt Smith's home built car. He's a talented driver and car builder.”

Russell Donovan was second in the feature race with Terry Corin from Tauranga Commercial Laundry in third.

'The Pro Ex chassis the ITM team are using is a locally made chassis and it works really well at Tauranga. Gavin Dyer who featured strongly in the heats he runs a Pro Ex chassis as well. There's a lot of local engineering going into these cars.”

Chris Taylor and Dan Corrin power slide for the main straight

The youth mini stock feature race, punctuated with two red lights for rollovers, was won by Sam Waddell who was under pressure from Trent Amrein, who got up to second, and opening night feature winner, and former quarter midget driver, Hayden Guptill. Earlier Guptill and Waddell had taken the heat wins.

The saloon heat race winners were Michelle Wymer and, driving the Lightning McQueen saloon Dan Corrin.

'It was an awesome night, big crowd lots of solid racing and lots of family entertainment as well so the crown loved it,” says Roger.

'The Lazyboy Boy series got underway, The Tauranga ITM team did well in the feature; one, two, three. The new cars from that team showing that they really go well at Baypark. That's Steve Cowling 2NZ in first, Chris cowling 272m second, third Dan Corrin driving the 95m car last night.

'Dan Corrin comes from Gisborne to race here because of the competition,” says Roger.

'Baypark being so wide and so fast, they say if you do well in a saloon or super saloon at Baypark you will do well at most other tracks.”

After the on-track action, the night was topped off with a spectacular fireworks display.
