Mount classic vehicle gathering

Classic cars, hot rods, custom cars and motorbikes are lining the main street of Mount Maunganui today for the second annual Wheels on Mainstreet event.

Around 300 cars are parked on Maunaganui Road and in Coronation Park as people peruse the variety of vehicles on display.

National Street Rod Association national delegate Straw Lye says there are lot of American cars and few of the more exotic ones.

'We are very impressed with the range of cars we have.

'Because we have the NSRA nationals here we've got cars from Wellington and up as high as Dargaville, right throughout the centre of the North Island.” Straw says the response from the public has been amazing we have buses running, the street is full and that's what it's all about.

'A feature of our event this year as an old car spinning around on the forklift in front of Breakers Cafe and Bar. That's creating some interest.

'We filled the main street and put the overflow in Coronation Park and that is full as well. I expect we should have around 250 cars plus about 30-40 motorbikes, so I think there we have close to 300 vehicles.”

This is only our second year the event has been held and organisers are thrilled with the turnout of cars and people.

'All we are doing is asking for a gold coin donation and after expenses are taken out we will support the local charities.”
