A broken down truck and trailer unit created traffic chaos on Tauranga Harbour Bridge this afternoon.
The truck broke down near the top of the bridge in the Tauranga-bound lane, just before 3pm.
It was towed away about 25 minutes after breaking down and normal traffic flow resumed.
Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the truck break down caused significant traffic congestion, particularly on the Mount Maunganui side of the bridge, where traffic was backed up to Totara Street. Traffic was backed up for about 1km along Dive Crescent.
Police officers were stationed at either side of the bridge and let one stream of traffic cross at a time until the truck was towed.
No vehicle accidents or injuries were reported as a result of the break down.
