Transport centre under attack

A transport centre on Willow Street will impede Tauranga's vibrancy and sustainability, according to some central city property owners.
Tauranga City Council is currently seeking public feedback on two possible locations for a new inner city transport centre.

Some central city property owners fear a transport centre on Willow Street will impede traffic flow into Tauranga.

The locations being considered are Durham Street south of Spring Street and Willow Street between Wharf and Hamilton Streets.
Central city property owner Allan Gifford says a transport centre on Durham Street will provide the greatest benefits for the greatest number of people.
'Willow Street was ruled out by the 2008 Transport Survey, so why is the council ignoring the consultants report? Why not go straight to Durham Street?,” says Allan.
He says many business owners are concerned the extra pedestrian crossings proposed near Willow Street and the increase in the number of buses will restrict traffic flow.
'A transport centre on Willow Street will not make a vibrant and sustainable city and it will be extremely unattractive to cars.
'What will it do to traffic flow in the CBD?”, asks Allan.

"A transport centre on Willow Street will not make a vibrant and sustainable city and it will be extremely unattractive to cars. " A vibrant city centre is one where cars come second to pedestrians. Making is attractive to cars should be way down the list on priorities. Realistically, city streets ought to be closed to all traffic except taxis, buses and couriers. But Tauranga has never had a council with the guts to make such a change.
