Detour for Highway 35

A State Highway 35 detour is in place for weekend motorists.

The New Zealand Transport Agency will open the alternative route around part of State Highway 35 south of Tokomaru Bay, which has been closed since Tuesday after bad weather caused a hillside slump.
The 30km detour will be signposted and will add about an hour to motorists' journeys. It will run from Mata Road south of Busby's Hill, through Tuakau Road to Ihungia Road north of Te Puia Springs.
The NZTA cautions motorists that sections of this alternative route are narrow and unsealed. It should be used only for essential travel.
The only available detour for heavy vehicles is via Opotiki on State Highway 2.
NZTA is working to restore vehicle access to State Highway 35 as soon as possible.
The Desert Road has been closed until further notice from Rangipo to Waiouru, due to heavy snow.

The NZTA urges motorists in the Gisborne district to drive with caution and to check www.highwayinfo.govt.nz for the latest updates on state highway conditions and road closures.
