Motorcyclist crashes into median

A Tauranga motorcyclist owes his life to his full face helmet after he struck a concrete median at highway speed last night.

The 41-year-old man was riding towards Tauranga from Te Puke when his bike struck the concrete median at the Bell Road intersection with State Highway 2 at about 7.30pm.

A motorcyclist crashed into a barrier on Bell Road overnight.

A Te Puke St John Ambulance spokesman says the man hit the kerb and came off his motorcycle, sustaining a head injury. The impact split the helmet.

'He was really lucky,” says the spokesman.

He suffered severe to moderate injuries and was taken to Tauranga Hospital.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says police are waiting for results of a blood test before any charges are laid.

"The motorcyclist rounded a left hand bend at Bell Road, lost control of his bike and hit a small traffic island. He came to rest some 80metres down the road, narrowly missing street signs.

"He was initially taken to Tauranga Hospital in critical condition with head injuries but was downgraded to serious to moderate condition after being assessed at hospital."
