Matapihi drink driver sentenced

A Matapihi woman described by a judge as a recidivist drink driver will serve a sentence of community work and community detention.

Candice Lloyd, 20, was sentenced in Tauranga District Court this morning after earlier pleading guilty to driving with excess breath alcohol, driving while disqualified and two counts of careless driving causing injury.

Candice Lloyd, 20, was sentenced in Tauranga District Court this morning.

Judge Louis Bidois told the court Lloyd was over the legal alcohol limit when she drove the car that crashed into a powerpole in Matapihi in June this year.

The 20-year-old was driving along Matapihi Road about 9.40pm on Monday, June 10 when she lost control of the vehicle, crossed the centre line and crashed into a power pole.

A female passenger in the car suffered fractures to her left femur and right ankle and another woman received a graze to her forehead and a depressed fracture to her chest. Both were taken to Tauranga Hospital.

Lloyd's blood was tested and found to contain 106 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal driving limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.

Three weeks prior to the crash in June, Lloyd was fined and disqualified from driving for six months on a separate drink driving charge.

In sentencing today, Judge Louis Bidois asked Lloyd how her friends injured in the crash are doing now.

'They are back on their feet,” she told him.

Judge Bidois told Lloyd she was lucky she didn't kill her friends.

'You drove the vehicle, lost control and collided with a pole. The car was un-warranted and unlicensed. You have displayed remorse for your actions.

'I need to hold you accountable for your offending. You shouldn't have been driving in the first place and could have easily had a head-on crash.”

Judge Bidois treated the drink driving charge as the lead charge and sentenced Lloyd to two months' community detention, 180 hours' community work, nine months' supervision and disqualified her from driving for 12 months and one day. Her disqualification will take place from November 16.

Lloyd was also ordered to pay $241.29 reparation for the blood alcohol test.

Judge Bidois converted her fine for her previous drink driving incident to a further 80 hours' community work. This is to be completed on top of the 140 hours' community work she has been sentenced to.

This punishment is more like it - time to be served consecutively. This should help the message sink in.
