Emergency services are dealing with a car crash at the intersection of State Highway 1 and State Highway 5, near Tirau.

Police say SH1 is blocked in both directions and this is causing significant traffic delays.

Motorists travelling between Putaruru and Tirau are advised to take an alternative route down SH5 then onto SH28, or delay travelling until the scene is cleared.

Traffic management are working to put clear diversions in place.
