Drivers heading home as the official summer holiday period ends are being asked to be patient and adjust their speed to the traffic and weather conditions. Preparing people and vehicles for a journey is essential according to ACC injury prevention consultant Carole Fleming, whether people are making a trip to the shops or the long drive home to or from a holiday destination.
Keeping your windscreen clean will help avoid visibility hazards while driving.
'We all love summer but things like sun-strike can be real problem when you're driving,” says Carole.
Even if people are just driving around town, sun-strike can cause a major visibility hazard.
'Make sure your windscreen is clean and take it slow around the corners.”
Carole also advises keeping sunglasses on hand in the car to help cope with glare.
Keeping to a safe speed is important. Often roads are busier during the holidays, not only with vehicle traffic but there may also be more pedestrians around including holidaymakers that are unfamiliar with the area.
'People can be unpredictable, so be prepared to stop suddenly if you need to and always drive to the conditions. Watch your following distances too.”
When it comes to safety, vehicle checks will save a lot of hassle.
'Most garages offer safety checks for tyre tread and pressure, lights, brakes, cooling systems and other components. A well-tuned vehicle is also more efficient, so you'll save money by cutting down on fuel consumption.
'Make sure everything is securely stowed when you pack your vehicle. Even small objects can become dangerous missiles in the event of a sudden stop or a crash.”
If people are towing, they should check the towing attachments and make sure couplings are compatible. The maximum speed when towing a trailer is 90kmph on the open road.
'And don't forget the basics – make sure everyone wears a seat belt and never drink and drive,” says Carole.
