More people, more money and longer guests nights – that is the verdict from the region's holiday parks as they take stock of the busy summer period.
The average amount of money a person will spend at a holiday park has increased to $98 per day, according to the Holiday Accommodation Parks Association.
Laura and Don Murray from Hamilton are among the rising number of Kiwis who stayed at Western Bay of Plenty holiday parks over summer.
Association figures also show the average amount spent by domestic visitors is $75 per day and $160 for international guests, both increases from previous years.
Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort manager Rebecca Crosby says a holiday park is a unique environment and that is why holidaymakers are choosing that option.
'It's the fact that mum and dad can get into the car after work with the kids, drive to a holiday park, let the kids run free in the grounds, and then relax with a bottle of beer or a glass of wine.”
She says 83 per cent of visitors coming to the holiday park are domestic visitors but international guests tend to stay longer.
Accommodation Te Puna owner Pauline Page says the recent holiday season has been the busiest for her holiday park.
'It's the price. People are going for the cheaper option. Whenever I get an enquiry, the first thing they'll ask is what the cheaper option is.”
Pauline says Accommodation Te Puna is made up of a motel complex and separate holiday park, so she is able to see the difference.
