A 19-year-old is fighting for his life in Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit after being hit by a car in Morrinsville.

Police say the man was hit by a vehicle on Lorne Street at 1.30am.

'He suffered critical, life threatening injuries and was taken to Waikato Hospital,” says a statement from police.

'The weather at the time was wet and road lighting was poor.”

The Serious Crash Unit attended the scene and closed the road, between Snell and Page Streets, until about 6am while a scene examination was conducted.

The driver of the vehicle which hit the teenager is helping police with their enquiries.

Police ask anyone who was in the area at the time of the accident and has information about what happened to contact their local police station.
