Wheel flies after car hits bridge

A Holden commodore sustained extensive damage when it was struck by the wheel of an elderly woman's car that hit the Wairoa Bridge last night.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says an elderly driver hit the side of the Wairoa Bridge in Bethlehem about 6.48pm on Tuesday.

An elderly driver hit the Wairoa Bridge causing the wheel of her car to fly off hitting another oncoming vehicle.

'She continued to drive when one of the wheels of her vehicle fell off and struck the front of an oncoming Holden commodore.”

A caller to the 0800 SunLive news hotline drove past the accident and saw a vehicle on the side of State Highway 2 with a missing wheel.

No one was injured in the accident.

Ian says no decision has been made into what, if any, charges will be laid.

The scary thing is she probably didn't even realise she had hit the side of the bridge......I totally understand that the elderly need their independence but some just should not be allowed to drive for the safety of themselves and others on the road.
