Sober drivers urged after 5 crashes

Experienced drivers getting behind the wheel drunk are 16 times more likely to be involved in a crash than someone who is sober and alert.

That is the message from police after attending five crashes, two involving alcohol, on Western Bay of Plenty roads from Friday night to this morning.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion is urging drivers to stay sober.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager, Senior Sergeant Ian Campion, says drivers need to think before they get behind the wheel as they are not only putting themselves at risk, but other motorists on the road.

'You're 16 times more likely to be involved in a crash if you're an experienced driver and you have been drinking alcohol and that triples if you're an inexperienced driver under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” says Ian.

'It's a no brainer really.”

Two drivers are facing alcohol related charges after crashes in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday morning.

At 1am on Saturday a 38-year-old man lost control of vehicle while crossing the Harbour Bridge, colliding with the concrete barrier.

Then 24 hours later at 1.24am a vehicle crashed at the intersection of Poike Road and State Highway 29.

'One of the occupants sustained serious injuries and was taken to Tauranga Hospital and the driver will be facing alcohol related charges.

Emergency services were also kept busy yesterday with a minor nose to tail at the intersection on St Andrews Drive and Cambridge Road along with a two car crash out at Pukehina.

Ian says the crash happened at about midday on Pukehina Beach Road with the two drivers suffering moderate injuries.

'It appears one of the vehicles was driving on the wrong side of the road.”

A Mount Maunganui St John Ambulance spokesperson says a man, in his 30s, and a woman, in her early 20s, were taken to hospital with suspected fractures to their pelvic regions.

A Tauranga Hospital spokesperson says the man is in a stable condition in hospital.

Ian says all these crashes are preventable no matter what the situation and motorists need to take extreme care and concentrate on what they are doing.

No tolerance to anyone that is caught drink driving. No special licences, no expections....people know they should not be drink driving, start making it tougher. If you loose your licence and cant get to work, to bad for you, you know the rules. If the laws are not toughened up it will just carry on the way it is.....
