Police are urging motorists to be attentive to the roads after eight crashes occurred in the Western Bay at the weekend.
Although all eight crashes from Friday afternoon to Monday morning were relatively minor with no serious injuries police are still urging motorists to drive with care.
With no serious injuries on Bay of Plenty roads police are asking motorists to remain attentive when behind the wheel.
Western Bay of Plenty Police highway patrol officer, Sergeant Mike Owen, says no injuries are a welcome result but eight crashes is still far too high.
The crashes were spread out across the Bay with three in Tauranga and the remaining five on State Highway 2 in Omokoroa, Papamoa and Welcome Bay.
'A lot of them were non-injuries so that's pleasing. We had nose to tails, a car through a fence and people going off the road over footpaths into rails,” says Mike.
The first crash occurred on Friday night when a car went through a fence on Topaz Drive in Papamoa.
Mike says neighbours from a nearby house who came out to investigate started showing 'aggressive behaviour” towards the driver, but it is not known if alcohol is a factor in the crash at this stage.
The most serious incident happened about midday Sunday when an elderly man blacked out behind the wheel rolling his car on SH2 near Francis Road, Omokoroa. Emergency services attended the scene and the highway was partially closed while they attended to the man.
'He drove up the road side bank to the left of the fog light so he will be getting medically assessed.”
Mike says as pleasing as the weekend was motorists need to be constantly alert while driving and prevent any momentary lapses in concentration.
'Motorists also need to keep attentive and watch their following distances and speed.”
