Long serving Chiefs super rugby director Gary Dawson is the new chief executive for Bay Leisure and Events Limited, it was announced today.

Gary, who led the Chiefs franchise for 13 years before stepping down in June, takes over his new role on September 2 from acting chief executive Ervin McSweeney who was in charge of Tauranga City Venues.

The new company was formed as a result of the merger of Tauranga City Aquatics Ltd and Tauranga City Venues Ltd, as well as several Tauranga City Council departments including sports and community facilities.

Bay Leisure and Events operates the city's aquatic facilities and the ASB Baypark Stadium.

Bay Leisure and Events Limited chairman Peter Farmer says the board is delighted to welcome Gary into the position.

Gary has been a Tauranga resident for 26 years and is highly respected within the sport and business community of Tauranga and the wider region, says Peter.

Peter also pays tribute to Ervin for the professional way he has guided the company through to this stage.
