Polytech staff strike

Members of the Tertiary Education Union at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic have again walked off the job.
The members are upset about the latest pay offer from the polytechnic were on strike all day Tuesday.
About 20 union members protested near the Windermere roundabout on State Highway 29 and then moved to the polytechnic's campus on Cameron Road.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic staff protest their pay conditions on State Highway 29, near the entrance to the polytechnic's Windamere campus.

The union members received thunderous honks from passing motorists at both locations.
TEU Bay of Plenty president Pam Fleming is outraged members have been forced to protest on the side of the road over their pay conditions.
'I consider myself a professional and to be driven to stand on the side of the road like this is insulting. It's not something I do easily, it kills me. But I don't know what else to do,” says Pam.
She says the polytechnic is refusing to negotiate in good faith and non union members have been given a pay rise of between four and eight per cent.
'We have been offered two per cent if we give up our four weeks annual leave, teach more days in the year and for longer hours,” says Pam.
She is frustrated because she believes non-union members are being offered better pay conditions.
'It annoys me that the colleague in my office is deemed to be more valuable than myself,” says Pam.
TEU members make up just over 30 per cent of the permanent academic teaching staff at the Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, and while hopeful to minimise disruption to students, the polytechnic says it is in a difficult negotiating position.
'The level of salary increases is one aspect of this dispute,” says Eve Steenson, HR Manager.
'We are affected by government expectations that any salary increases in the public sector must be associated with productivity gains. This is what we are working through now in our negotiations and look forward to getting back to the negotiation table.”
