Computer drivers licence milestone reached

Tauranga City Council and Bay of Plenty Polytechnic have celebrated the 1000th International Computer Drivers Licence (ICDL) test passed by a council employee.

Since 2003, council employees are required to enrol in the ICDL and most choose to study with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. With the strong support of Tauranga City Council CEO Stephen Town, council employees not only get the chance to attend free facilitated training at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic's city-based Bongard Centre, or access to Papamoa Library or on the community computing bus, they are also encouraged to spend time at work accessing the training software and assessing themselves ready for online tests.
The 1000th council employee to pass the test is Nic Hume, a civil engineer who has been at TCC for about eight months.
Nic says he found the ICDL to be very useful. Although he used software such as Excel a lot in his work, going through the training had made him realise that there was a great deal of functionality that he had never discovered that he could really benefit from.
