Junior crew takes on world's best

A group of Bay of Plenty dancers are making history as the first junior crew from the region to perform on the biggest stage in Las Vegas to take on the world's best.

In August, Tauranga's Urban Dance crew ‘Hysteria', consisting of seven dancers aged 10-13, from Te Puke, Papamoa, Mount Maunganui and Whakatane, will represent New Zealand at the World Hip Hop Dance Championships.

Hysteria is the first junior crew to take on the world's best when they compete at the World Hip Hop Dance Championships next month.

Presented by Hip Hop International, which co-produces the hit American dance series America's Best Dance Crew with American Idol judge Randy Jackson, the World Hip Hop Dance battles brings together the best dancers from around the world.

More than 1000 competitors from 40 countries will descend on the city that never sleeps.

Hysteria was crowned national champions for the junior age division in April, and has competed at regional and national levels against the country's best, earning the right to be on the world stage.

For crew member Ethan Hika, 12, his dreams of becoming a professional hip hop dancer are well underway.

'It's a dream come true. It's something I hoped would happen … one day.”

Urban Dance director and choreographer Sarah Martin says she has high expectations for Hysteria.

After winning the junior division at nationals in April, Sarah has been taking the crew for regular trainings and says the children are 'beasts in the studio”.

'The kids are obviously very excited but they are very focused and understand the hard work needed to achieve their goal of medalling at this competition.”

Last year Sarah took a mega crew, consisting of more than 16 dancers, to the world championships.

'This is a huge achievement for both Urban [Dance] and the Bay, to be producing world class dancers is exciting and the future looks promising.

On Saturday, July 20, Hysteria is hosting a fundraising concert at The Orchard Church in Te Puke to fundraise for their trip.

Doors open 6pm and the show begins 6.30pm. Tickets, at the door, cost $12 or $40 for a family. Refreshments will also be on sale.
