Drink drivers busted in Tauranga

A motorist who blew 1114 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath is one of 25 people facing drink driving charges as a result of a week-long drink driving operation in Tauranga.

The adult limit is 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

From Monday, June 10, Operation Prohibition saw police officers stop and breath test 4394 drivers – 27 were processed and 25 were charged with drink driving related charges.

Officer in charge of the operation Sergeant Mark Duytshoff says two people were charged for driving whilst under the influence of drugs.

He says seven people had their licence suspended and seven cars were impounded.

'Perhaps the message is starting to get through. Over the last few years since the Traffic Alcohol Group was established, the number of vehicles stopped annually has increased yet the number of drink drivers has steadily decreased.

'This result is encouraging but unfortunately we still have many that aren't listening.”

Those facing charges are aged from 15 to 58-years-old and had a range of breath alcohol readings from 203 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath for the person aged under 20, to 1114, nearly three times the legal adult limit of 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

'Many people express surprise when they see the Booze Bus operating in the early morning or during the day, however drivers can expect to be breath tested anytime and anywhere.

'The relevance of this can be shown by the fact that one 56-year-old woman was stopped by officers at 1.20pm with a breath alcohol reading of 956, over twice the legal limit.”

Mark says a notable trend is the number of drivers that have consumed alcohol but then passed the roadside breath screening test.

'This means that they have had a drink but then stopped so that they can still drive. That's good but of course – beware.

'We all know that once you start to drink your decision making is affected and before you know it, you have had too much and it doesn't take much. Best advice is to make your travel arrangements before you go out drinking. That way you can relax and enjoy your evening.”

Mark urges those consuming alcohol to make transport arrangements prior to going out or drinking making sensible decisions which help keep the roads safer.

... but still needs improvement. The message IS getting through and most people now are drinking responsibly, or not at all, if they are driving. Think about how you'd feel if you accidentally killed someone while under the influence of alcohol. A child, an adult, maybe even one of your own family. There is nothing "clever" about drink driving.

Not that I condone drunk driving, but what if you killed someone while driving, period?. Its not just drunk driving, more people are killed in non alcohol related accidents as a whole, drive wise.
