Safety works at Tauriko

Work to reduce the number of serious crashes on State Highway 29 at Tauriko will start Sunday evening and motorists are being warned to expect delays.

Road workers will remove the passing lane from Redwood Lane to Gargan Road, install a right turn bay at the Gargan Road intersection and a apply skid resistance surface to improve safety at the SH29 location.

SH29 in Tauriko is a crash hot spot.

NZ Transport Agency's Bay of Plenty state highways manager Brett Gliddon says the passing lane that starts from past Redwood Lane to Gargan Road will be removed to reduce the risk of further serious crashes at this location, and in particular those involving vehicles turning right into Gargan Road.

Brett says the changes were part of the NZTA's ‘safe system' approach to reducing deaths and serious injuries on our roads.

'We're aiming to reduce deaths and serious injuries by taking action in four key areas - safer roads and roadsides, safe vehicles, safe road use and safe speeds.

'The NZTA is making significant investments in safety improvements on the region's roads, we are working with police to promote safe driving through advertising and enforcement and we are encouraging motorists to buy the safest vehicles they can afford.”

By removing the passing lane Brett says the shoulder can be widened to allow more room for cyclists and more room between opposing traffic.

He says a temporary speed restriction will be in place during the works which may cause minor delays.

'This work is expected to be completed by mid-next week.”

great so now there will be no passing lanes from soldiers road until you get into Tauranga residential area, i can see the need for the turning lane into Gargan road, why not reduce the lenghth of the passing lane as this is going to create very slow traffic flows over the kaimais most likely creating rash overtaking moves by idiot drivers

Really?

Does the whole 1km long passing lane need to be removed as stated in the report? Surely the passing lane could be shortened to accomodate these improvements, not removed completely?

No consultation on this one

So north bound there, will be no passing lanes from just south of the Kaimai School until...the Expressway - come on NZTA, has this one been thought through - perhaps ending the Redwood Lane Gargan Road passing lane a fraction earlier, fully laden logging trucks crawl up that that hill, trucks with containers crawl up that hill; removing the passing lane will create more congestion and hazardous passing manoeuvres.

Why not bugger up SH29 as well

NZTA has taken out all of the passing opportunities on SH2 north of Tauranga. At least they are consistent. Soon they will be allowing even more slow moving agricultural vehicles onto the road with more yellow lines so that there is no choice but to follow them at 40km/h. Good one NZTA !

Ministerial Review

If NZTA proceed with this perhaps a Ministerial Review of NZTA operations, process, and planning would be appropriate and then whoever made this decision might be working for ...who cares. If MP's had to drive home from Wellington every weekend I wonder what the state of our roads would be - come on Tony, Simon, Brendon - give the Kaimais a drive and see how it feels to be the 20th car in line behind 4 logging trucks - dare you to!

outstanding effort !!!

bureaucracy gone mad ! so all traffic will be expected to go as slow as the slowest truck crawling up the hill ? will NZTA take any responsibility for the next death here caused by a frustrated driver overtaking illegally ? Can we have a name of who came up with this one ?

NZTA really are next level stupid!

This will prove to be a really poorly thought out roading change. It will more than likely increase the number of crashes on that stretch of highway and increase the level of traffic congestion heading towards Tauranga.

Who's in charge

I didn't realise Aaron Gilmore was in charge of NZTA
