The public are being asked for feedback on a range of options for the Maunganui-Girven Road and Te Maunga intersections.
NZTA is hosting a public open day on Thursday, April 18 at ASB Baypark Arena to gain feedback from the public on three shortlisted options to improve congestion and safety at the intersection outside Bayfair and Te Maunga intersections.
The public are being asked to provide feedback on options to improve
NZTA's Bay of Plenty state highways manager, Brett Gliddon says investigations by the agency have identified that any improvement options undertaken at MGI will impact on the movement of traffic at the State Highway 2 and State Highway 29 intersection at Te Maunga.
'To ensure a safe and efficient design for the MGI intersection, our investigations to date have indicated that an improvement to the Te Maunga intersection - some 800 metres to the east – is needed and should be undertaken at the same time.”
Brett says the agency has identified three potential options for further investigation.
Before selecting a preferred option, NZTA is keen to gain feedback from the public on the three shortlisted options.
'The project team will be available to explain and discuss the three options and want to hear the public views on the three design options. The last open day was very useful as there were things identified by the public that helped with our investigations.”
He says all three options include constructing flyovers, similar to Hewletts Road, and two of the options propose to move the existing railway track.
'There is a lot to think about and this is why it is important that people come along to the open day.”
The next steps for the project after the public open day will be to undertake assessments on the social, economic and environmental impacts of the three options to determine the overall preferred solution.
Brett says once a preferred option is selected (anticipated to be early 2014), a Notice of Requirement will be prepared for designating the land required for the project to be included in the city's district plan.
The public open day will start at 3pm on Thursday 18 April at the ASB Baypark Arena (Suite 1) and will finish at 7pm.

This project has been on the table and drifting about for many years, in fact well prior to the Habour Bridge going in, the Girven road bottleneck was known to occur as a result of the improved traffic flow to and from the bigger/better habour bridge. So at last .... some movement lets hope that TCC do not scuttle this like thaey are trying to do with the Welcome Bay underpass and bridge/road widening through to 15th Ave, please do make sure everyone that TCC and Councillors do not have "ANY SAY" in this as they will mess it up for everyone else.
Roundabouts

If they put in some more roundabouts can NZTA hold some classes to teach kiwi drivers how to proceed when they approach a roundabout? i.e. if nothing is entering the roundabout from your right please carry on rather than stopping, waiting 10 minutes until there is no sign of a vehicle within a 5 mile radius, then slowly crawling around the roundabout. Kiwi's need to learn the art of finding the gap to keep traffic flowing. Some Tauranga drivers must have spent half of their life at a roundabout waiting for invisible cars.

Proper design of these intersections is crucial for both residents and businesses within this precinct. The opportunity for safer pedestrian movements between Bayfair - Owens Place and Girven Rd has to be great news for residents (of all ages), also for struggling businesses. All residents and business owners should attend this open day and express their preference. Its the only chance we will have to influence the final design, which will effect property values and lifestyles in our precinct. Be there on April 18th and register your design preference.
