ANZ ATMs in skimming attack

ANZ is contacting customers who may have had their security breached after a number of ATM machines were targeted by fraudsters.

ANZ reports a number of ANZ ATM machines have been compromised by card skimming devices and cards used in those machines may be affected.

A number of ANZ ATMs have been breached by skimming machines.

Debit and credit cards from ANZ and other banks are thought to have been affected.

The bank discovered the security breach yesterday after a number of fraudulent transactions from locations in Bulgaria were identified.

ANZ managing director of retail Kerri Thompson says fraudsters have used hit-and-run tactics placing card skimmers on a number of machines for a short time.

'We're aware that these fraudsters monitor news media reports so we're reluctant to reveal too much about the situation.

'However it does appear that these fraudsters have used hit-and-run tactics – placing devices on ATMs for a short time – to bypass our frequent checks.”

She says ANZ is identifying the cards that were used in the affected machines and are contacting cardholders from ANZ and other banks that might have used these ATMS.

To prevent accounts being accessed illegally and funds removed, ANZ is restricting withdrawals on ANZ cards used in affected ATMs.
If cardholders are unable to access funds temporary access can be obtained by calling the contact centre. Customers also having problems with their credit and debit cards, or notice any unusual activity should call the contact centre on 0800 269 296.
ANZ will arrange to replace the cards as quickly as possible at no cost to the cardholder. Customers of other banks should contact their bank.
The bank is also assuring customers it will reimburse them for any loss of funds or fees incurred as a result of this fraud.
