The green arrow has returned to the Chapel Street traffic lights after its removal in December from the turnoff to Bay Central.
A vehicle caught by the right turn because the green arrow was not around.
And like the comic book character namesake, the green arrow's absence has been blamed for an outbreak of disorder - a series of accidents and near misses that has made the turn off to the shopping centre dangerous.
The arrow signal was removed because of a queuing problem with traffic using the recently opened harbour bridge, says Tauranga City Council's transportation manager Martin Parkes.
But it didn't work.
"Unfortunately a few people didn't look and got clobbered. I think we have had three crashes down there you could probably attribute to people turning when the path wasn't clear.
"They were playing follow my leader and got caught out. It was driver error, nothing to do with the lights."
Traffic engineers have reinstated the green and red turn arrows, and will continue to monitor the intersection. The original queuing problem has not reappeared.

Too stupid to drive

Another example where the majority is forced to comply with the lowest common mental denominator. Regulations catering for even the most stupid aid ever-increasing mutation but sadly hamper natural selection.
