Drivers to outwit and outlast

Team tactics will be in full force as racing enthusiasts get behind the wheel and hit the home straight on ASB Baypark's infamous terracotta track tomorrow night.

ASB Baypark hosts round one of the inaugural Caravan Derby and Baypark Social Team Derby Challenge in a jam packed night of racing, including sprint cars, super saloons, saloon cars, stock cars and mini stocks.

Classic Hits breakfast presenters Will Johnston and Bridget Hastie test out the ASB Baypark track.

Organiser Roger Bailey says they have 22-25 cars registered for the opening round of the derby tomorrow.

Social teams of friends, family or workmates - over the age of 16 and with a driver's licence - will get behind the wheel of a pre-loved, everyday vehicle and use blocking, tapping and other race strategies to outwit, outplay and outlast their competitors.

'It's going to be a hoot,” says Roger.

'A group of three cars will work together and if one is leading the other two can hold back and block the rest of the field. A bit of tactics come into to play.”

The points-based competition is not a demolition race, with competitors trying to keep their car and points in tact as they vie for a podium position and bragging rights after the three rounds throughout the season.

Overall winners from round one will lead the field into round two and three of the series which will be held at ASB Baypark on March 9 and April 13.

Roger says the idea is to build the series up to eventually have 60 cars competing.

At ASB Baypark yesterday, Classic Hits breakfast presenters Will Johnston and Bridget Hastie got behind the wheel to test out the track ahead of racing.

Will says it is great because there are no rules in the derby and it is about getting out and having some fun.

'The two of us know nothing whatsoever about speedway or caravan racing.”

Gates open at 5pm with racing from 6.30pm finishing at 10pm.

Come on Tauranga get out and support one of the best tracks in the Southern Hemisphere and some American drivers reckon it might even be the best any where. Remember it is here in Tauranga.
